Minova Always problem solving

During construction of the Vaðlaheiðargöng Tunnel in Iceland, an unexpected inrush of geothermal water at up to ~600 l/s at temperatures reaching 65°C brought excavation to a standstill.

To regain control, injection sealing was carried out using the Minova CarboPur systems, combining invert injection with injection umbrellas and additional drilling and sealing into the tunnel walls where required.

Minova’s water control technology played a crucial role in bringing the project back under control. Water inflow volumes were reduced by ~80%, down to ~120 l/s, enabling works to continue. The remaining inrush water was collected and guided out of the tunnel via drainage pipes.

Today, the same geothermal water that once halted excavation and threatened the project now heats the nearby Forest Lagoon geothermal spa in Eyjarfjarðarsveit. An enduring reminder of how effective ground control solutions can help overcome even the most challenging underground conditions.
