What are Minova’s Self Drilling Anchors, and where are they used?

Brenelli 12 Enhanced Compressed

Self Drilling Anchors, or SDAs, combine drilling, grouting, and reinforcement installation in one operation, providing a versatile solution for mining, tunnelling, and civil engineering applications.

The system uses a sacrificial drill bit fitted to the leading hollow bar. As the system is drilled, grout is injected through the hollow bar, and once the required depth is achieved, the hollow bar remains in the ground and becomes the load-carrying reinforcement.

This one-pass process is ideally suited to weak, cohesionless, or fractured ground, where an unsupported borehole may collapse before a reinforcing element can be inserted. By drilling, grouting, and installing the reinforcement at the same time, SDAs can eliminate the use of temporary casing, reducing installation stages and time, whilst simplifying work in restricted access locations.

SDAs have a wide variety of uses including:

  • Soil nails to reinforce slopes, excavations and retained ground
  • Rock nails to stabilise fractured or weakened rock
  • Micropiles working in tension and compression
  • Ground anchors for retaining structures

Our SDA solution provides high-capacity T-thread options extending to T111, while galvanised and TwinCoat™ finishes support long-term durability in demanding infrastructure environments.

For structural micropiles, our R32 to T111 SDA systems are CE certified, validating structural performance, load-bearing capacity, manufacturing consistency, and factory production control. This provides engineers, designers, and contractors with a certified, ready-to-specify solution for challenging foundation projects.
